Edit:   Click:   Date: 2023-06-08
After traffic lights, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) may soon be used in street lights and public buildings soon in Taiwan, Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said.   Ma made the remarks at the inauguration of Genesis Photonics Inc.'s new plant in Tainan City, Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) reported.   The CNA report quoted Ma as saying Taiwan trails only Singapore in the use of LED traffic lights, and that the next step is to utilize LEDs in street lights and indoor lighting devices.   He said green technology is one of the Cabinet's six key development industries.   Ma noted efforts to develop the industry have turned Taiwan into the world's biggest LED lighting and molding suppliers, adding that the newly-built plant is set to create some 300 jobs.    Genesis Photonics Inc. president David Chung said the company is confident about the future of the LED industry.   He said that despite the faltering global economic situation that resulted in a large stockpile of LEDs, the company will overcome the challenge by focusing on technological upgrades.    Chung also said the company's new plant will feature Taiwan's first production lines for six-inch epitaxial wafers.   The CNA report said the plant will also establish a center of innovation to train research and development talent in the field of solid-state lighting technology.
